Why SheVentures? A message from the host Doria Lavagnino

After nearly two decades as a magazine editor at Condé Nast and Hearst in New York City, — I experienced — career and life pivots that left me disoriented.

No one told me that at age 40 I would be juggling motherhood,  — caring for my parents, and my own career, as well as my physical and mental health —  Not to mention the endless amount of scheduling; that would inevitably get derailed by a sudden water leak, a sick child, or a pandemic…

Plus, I don’t know about you, but as a career woman and a mom, I feel hoodwinked when I think about all the labor that women provide pro bono as caregivers.

My daughters (now 18 and 15) visiting me at Glamour to check out the free beauty swag.

“We should work for free because we are selfless,” said no woman I’ve ever met.

Moreover, I lacked resources and relatable role models. Don’t get me wrong — some women seem to ably juggle it all at once due to circumstance or choice. They lean in. I tried. When life required me to take on all these roles at once I did. Then, I crashed and burned. Thankfully, I put myself back together, but let’s leave that story for another time.

“Women must understand and control their economic futures in order to control their fates.”

My goal is for this platform to be a safe haven of trusted information where women can learn, explore, participate and debate any hot topic. If you have any feedback or suggestions, I’d love to hear from you. Below you will find a form to submit articles, ideas, say hi, or explore partnerships.

Meet The SheVentures Team

Doria Lavagnino, host of SheVentures Podcast

I am an “accidental entrepreneur” driven by mission-focused startups. As co-founder of CentSai, a financial wellness company, we help people make confident personal finance decisions. I’ve learned more these past five years of building two businesses from scratch than from anything else I’ve done. Prior to entrepreneurship, I spent 15 years as a magazine editor at Hearst and Condé Nast. I started the SheVentures podcast to amplify the voices of women who’ve made career or life pivots.  We focus on the nitty-gritty, personal triumphs and challenges, and the resulting actionable tips that foster community.  I encourage women to be active as mentors, angel investors, and decision-makers. My passions: Italy, entrepreneurship, social media, financial literacy, questioning the status quo, and being the mom to two Gen Z’s.

Kenya Munoz, Social Media and Podcast Producer

I’m a Senior at California State University, Los Angeles studying business administration with a concentration in marketing. I launched my own small business while still a student, which is where I found my passion for digital marketing and social media. Supporting women is crucial and I believe that this topic isn’t discussed enough. I feel SheVentures is a secure place where women can support one another, overcome obstacles together, and share their own stories!

Jo Ann Liguori, Editorial Consultant

I’m a Brooklyn-based editor and writer who has spent 30 years in the publishing industry (mainly in magazines aimed at women) as a copy editor, copy chief, and managing editor. I’ve always been passionate about women’s issues (I even minored in Women’s Studies at Brooklyn College back in the day), so I’m thrilled to be part of SheVentures’ mission of uplifting and elevating female entrepreneurs. In my spare time, I enjoy spoiling my niece and nephew, sitting on the beach, cooking, and growing my food-centric Instagram (follow me @auntjocooks).

This platform will provide additional resources to supplement the podcast: profiles and how-tos for career, money, investing, and well, — life.

Today I am a full-time entrepreneur writer, editor, and podcaster. And guess what? I still don’t have it all figured out.

The difference: I don’t go at it alone. I know the value of community, listening to other women, and paying it forward.

I listen–there is so much we can offer one another through mentorship. At some point, this mission became my full-time gig, not hollow rhetoric. As an entrepreneur and co-founder of a financial education platform, CentSai, I am laser-focused on women and their relationship with money. My heartfelt passion is this:

I don’t believe there is a one-size-fits-all solution to work, life, and money. Our experiences differ based on age, race, class, nationality, education, geography, and gender identity.

I want to share other women’s voices and solutions, especially those different from mine, uncensored. SheVentures is a place to magnify our stories —  a culmination of our work/life pivots shared in an interview-style podcast where we take up space and speak our minds.

Kelly Meehan Brown, founding member of SheVentures podcast

SheVentures is more than a podcast to me. When I heard Doria say that for too long, women had their stories told for them, and that this endeavour would strive to give women a platform to project their voice– I knew I’d found a passion. SheVentures represents women encouraging and helping women — building each other up rather than tearing one another down. Working on this podcast opened up my eyes to all that women do in this world, seen and unseen, and how valuable that work is. SheVentures helped me pinpoint my focus, and that continues today in my role at Meredith today.

If you are looking for a community of supportive women who inspire–you’ve found it!
